The name is Dutch although there are Bols in Norway, Belgium, France, the UK, the US, South Africa and Canada.
The N. American branch dates to 1847 when a goup of Dutch immigrants landed in New York and moved west. There they founded the towns of Holland and Zealand, MI and somewhat later Orange City Iowa. Most were members of the Reformed Church although there is a Jewish branch of the family that traces its roots to the expulsion of the Jews fron Spain in the late fifteenth century.
